Why is everybody looking at me like I’m a research specimen?

1 October, 2008

“Participants needed!” it said. “Earn €15!” it said. So I volunteered to take part in some perception research.

The task consisted of watching videos of someone speaking and judging whether his gestures looked unnatural. Two sessions later, I still have extracts from Aesop’s Fables in a delicious Irish accent running around my head.

The theory is that gestures can be synchronised with the emphasis on words or come a little beforehand, but if they come afterwards they are noticeably unnatural. I think this is probably correct. NPC animators, digibox producers and 35mm projectionists, take note.

  1. It needs to be natural. Ever seen an Italian on the phone? – I rest my case.
