Bottle bank

5 August, 2010

It’s a weekday, Charlie’s at work, and I’m supposed to be getting on with my PhD. So I’m trying very hard to ignore the view from the balcony. The problem is, there’s always something new and interesting going on outside. For example:

I saw a homeless guy, complete with trolley as is the custom here, make a slow and systematic investigation of particular bins outside the apartment. I thought nothing of it.

A few minutes later, I saw another do the same thing. I was puzzled: what’s so great about those specific bins?

A few minutes later, a third guy. He met a jogger returning to the building, who gave him her empty water bottle.

Instead of begging, they’re collecting bottles and cans for the refund. It’s a win-win arrangement, supported by the residents who sometimes leave the refundable bottles out separately. By the evening, the trolleys are piled high with recyclables. No wonder it’s so clean around here.
